A-Tech's Culture Festival
“Volunteering at the Culture Festival was a fun and hardworking experience. While helping out, I was able to bond and socialize with my fellow Key Clubbers that were also volunteering. I was first overwhelmed when people began to pile up waiting to be served food at our table, but with good teamwork and effort, it was not a problem. I also had great learning experience at this event by learning a lot about other cultures, especially through their foods. We were able to first help serve food to people who attended this event, and after when we were finished, we were able to help ourselves to the foods that festival had to offer. There were also many live performances performed by students at our school where each of them had their own unique ways of representing their culture. Serving people at our table helped me prepare for any service jobs I might have coming in the future. Serving at this event helped me better my cooperation skills and I would be glad to do anything in the future similar to this event.”

Building the Magical Forest (Opportunity Village)
“The Saturday of Service is a wonderful event that runs through June to October at Opportunity Village. I attended one Saturday along with my amazing companions: Daniel Lang, Kaili Canon, and Gabby DeVera. We were assigned the tasks of carving pumpkins for their Halloween event and getting the maze ready to be painted. Despite it being another typical, hot Vegas day, it was a day full of fun because of the people I was with! To say the least, my experience at the Saturday of Service was not only amazing due to the fact that we were helping hundreds of adults with mental disabilities, but also because I spent the day bonding with some incredible people. If I may add, this service event is great because the qualifications for a senior chord for Key Club are 50 hours of service and 80% attendance for two years.”
- Halley Darwin (President, 07/27/2013) “The members of Advanced Technologies Academy spent their Saturday morning donating time to Opportunity Village’s Saturday of Service on September 14. Opportunity Village is an amazing organization that helps people with intellectual or other disabilities find careers, further creativity, meet friends, and integrate with our community. This not-for-profit charity, established in 1954, has become the largest private Nevadan reintegration program. It aids over 3,000 people every year with a variety of activities that show how the intellectually disabled are truly capable of living a normal life.
The A-Tech Key Club contributed to the charity by removing lights from trees in the Magical Forest and redecorating for the first annual HallOVeen. Every year Opportunity Village runs the Magical Forest during the holiday season with 100% of the proceeds donated to services to help the disabled and their families. This year, they just started a similar event that will occur in October with a Halloween theme instead. Halley Darwin, Gatsby Darwin, Daniel Lang, Anderson Leung, KC Cannon, Rici, Nickolas Scipione, Davin Suzuki, Jacob Schmit, Mark Paragas, and Benjamin Stevens cut down the old lights and ornaments that covered the trees and applied a more seasonal atmosphere. Newcomers learned much more about Key Club as we bonded over movies, music, and plans for the future. Topping off this day of new friends and assisting others, we took a spectacular train ride through the village, where our group saw the true majesty of the Magical Forest in progress. With the influx of another batch of members, our first event displays the spirit and contributions this year will bring.” - Nickolas Scipione (10th grade, 09/14/2013) |

Greek Food Festival
“Spanning three days at the Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek food festival was recently held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September. With varying cuisines served such as gyro (yee-ro), grilled pita bread with slices of meat dubbed as gyro meat, topped off tomatoes and onions, and finally, slathered with Tzatziki (Zah-ZEEK-KEE) sauce (sour cream and onion). Said gyro was also served with ‘Greek’ Fries (potato fries with lemon and spices). Not only was there food, there was also the entertainment, which included, dancing, singing, and yelling out traditional Greek word such as “OPA!” (Ope-Ah). Church tours were also given and visitors were led in shown the wonderful murals that the church had to offer. Also a couple of lucky winners came home with some of the following prizes from the raffle: a 2014 Mercedes Benz of their choice, an iPad, and many more prizes! Benjamin Stevens, 10th, said “My experiences at the festival were awesome and super epic. I was wrapping the gyros at the gyro stand and it was awesome. The best part was the free food!” All in all volunteering at the festival not only got you free food, but you got the experience to make the food, experience the culture, and meet Grecian immigrants who will tell you amazing stories. Sound like fun? If it does, Key Club hopes to catch you working at one of the gyros or even Tzatziki Stand!

The Walk to End Alzheimer's
“The Alzheimer’s Walk was hosted at the Fashion Show Mall on October 26. I arrived at the Mall before 7 in the morning, which was a little cold outside. I saw other Key Clubs sign-in for the event. Since I arrived earlier than expected, I decided to walk around and see the booths that were set up. I ran into Ben and Mark, and walked with them on the first floor. My friends from other Key Clubs were planning to join this event, so I was waiting for them. I also ran into Tommy on the way and saw Jaya! The other volunteers started to lead us to our positions to guide the walkers at around 8. Mark, Daniel Cruz, Sae, and other A-Tech Key Clubbers joined our group stationed on the first floor nearby Forever21 and Starbucks. The walk started at around 9, and we started to see walkers! We cheered on the walkers until about 11. The Alzheimer’s Walk was the first event I volunteered at for Key Club! It was a very memorable experience with time spent with my friends.”
